How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile
A complete profile helps people confirm what you do, where you work, and how to contact you. It cannot guarantee a particular Google position: eligibility, competition, distance, and relevance also matter.
Informational guide. Google’s interface and policies can change; confirm current requirements before editing your profile.
Confirm eligibility and control access
Use a Business Profile only if your company meets Google’s current eligibility rules. Claim or request access to an existing listing before creating another, keep owner access in a company-controlled account, and complete the verification steps Google provides. Give coworkers only the access they need.
If you work from home and travel to customers, review service-area business rules; you generally should not display an address where customers are not served. Do not invent an office, branch, or service area to reach more searches.
Complete essential details accurately
Choose the primary category that best describes your real business and add only relevant secondary categories. Write a clear description and keep your phone, hours, website, and services current. Use your actual business name—do not add keywords, cities, or promotions that are not part of the name used in real life.
Check holiday hours and make sure calls are answered. Link to a useful page, such as a service or contact page, rather than sending visitors somewhere unrelated to what they need.
Share current photos and useful updates
Add genuine, recent photos of your location, team, products, or completed work, with permission. Avoid misleading imagery, overly promotional graphics, and customer information. Post updates when they are useful, and keep prices, menus, hours, and links up to date.
Invite real customers to leave honest reviews without buying them or tying benefits to positive ratings. Respond courteously without revealing private information.
Review performance and correct inconsistencies
Once a month, check that the profile is verified, suggested edits are accurate, and every link works on a phone. Compare calls, direction requests, and website visits with actual inquiries; profile views alone are not customers.
